A FUNNY THING...

Exhibition plus special events:
October 18 – November 2, 2008
Opening Reception:
Sunday, Oct. 19
1 PM – 3 PM

Guffaws at the Guggenheim? Perhaps not. Mirth at the Metropolitan? Doubtful. But humor and art will come together at the sTudio 6 gallery at Fort Tilden in the Rockaways as the Rockaway Artists Alliance presents their newest exhibition A Funny Thing... The exhibition brings together works that explore the humor in art, be dark or light. Through painting, photography, film, drawing and the printed word nearly a dozen artists tackle the ticklish by using visual puns, optical illusion, oddly joined images, jokes and even tittering titles to poke the funny bone. To wit, "Catch of the Day," "Late For Dinner for the Last Time," "The Turtle and The Snail", "Frankenstein Meets the Daffodils" and "Boo!" must be seen to appreciated.

A Funny Thing... runs from Saturday October 18 to November 2. There will be an opening reception on Sunday October 19 from 1-3. All are invited to mix with good company, meet the artists and sample artistically appointed refreshments. As always at RAA openings there will also be lively entertainment. Although plans are currently still in the making, visitors to A Funny Thing... will be greeted by music, comedy and possibly a 'best joke' contest. Gallery goers are encouraged to bring their best general audience jokes, within a three joke limit, for the occasion.

A Funny Thing... artists include Marvin Schwartz, Carol Ricky, Geoff Rawling, Denis Macrae, Martha Killian, Dan Guarino, Amanda Francin and Stephanie Bellomo.

Having just concluded its successful multi-gallery, multimedia ARTSplash exhibition, the Rockaway Artists Alliance is not only looking forward to A Funny Thing... but also to its annual Halloween extravaganza. This year's free event, constructed in its T-7 gallery is titled I Want My Mummy! and will feature an Egyptian pyramid sized maze filled with haunting sights, sounds, thrills, chills, frights and screams. Admission and parking are free on from 5pm-9pm on Thursday October 30, Halloween Friday October 31, and Saturday November 1st.

The RAA invites one and all to have a good fright with I Want My Mummy! and a good laugh at A Funny Thing...

RAA works in partnership with the National Park Service at Gateway National Recreation Area and in part is supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, JP Morgan Chase, The Independence Community Foundation and Brooklyn Brewery.
