Geoff's Art Class: An Exhibition

Exhibition plus special events:
March 8 – March 20, 2009
Opening Reception:
Sunday, March 9
1 PM – 3 PM

Once again bringing colorful new talent into the spotlight, the Rockaway Artists Alliance presents Geoff's Art Class: An Exhibition. With works from 30 artists, this show represents the creative output of the twice weekly painting classes sponsored by the RAA and taught by painter and multi media artist Geoff Rawling. The exhibition will run from Saturday March 7 to Sunday March 29 in the sTudio-6 gallery at Fort Tilden. An opening reception will celebrate Geoff's Art Class: An Exhibition on Sunday March 8 from 1-3pm. Refreshments, entertainment and good company will all be on hand. Parking and admission are free.

sTudio-6 is also the site of the twice weekly painting classes, which have been running for the past two years. The evening class is held every Thursday from 7-9pm and on Tuesday mornings the session is from 10am-12. All ages and abilities are welcome. Young and old are invited to explore. Beginners and professionals are encouraged to paint any subject they like. In fact many of the artists featured in Geoff's Art Class: An Exhibition had their first experience with brush and paint through these classes.

Geoff Rawling, a painter and self-taught artist, instructs each student and assists them with perspectives and techniques gathered throug h his lifelong involvement with the arts. His method is to provide guidance while allowing each to develop in their own individual style. Mr. Rawling is a fulltime professional artist and has also served as RAA president. His works have appeared in numerous exhibitions and in publications around the world.

Working in water soluble oils the artists of Geoff's Art Class: An Exhibition have produced a wide variety of styles and approaches. Using color, technique and perspective choices, they have conjured up a collection that ranges from landscape to portraits and from abstract to finely observed detail.

Extending their creativity to all parts of this showcase, the artists have also been closely involved in work selection and reception planning, and will even be creating the refreshments and part of the musical entertainment.

General gallery hours are Saturday 12-4p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m. and by appointment. For more information call (718) 474-0861, e-mail rockart116@aol.com. Each painting class is offered at $15 per session. Materials are included.

Sunday's gallery reception will be followed by a meeting of the RAA Writers Group for 4-6 in sTudio 6. Writers of all genres gather to sha re information and opportunities, and read and discuss their work. All are invited to enjoy the reception and stay for the meeting.

The RAA's general meetings are the second Monday of every month starting at 7:30pm in sTuido 6. All are welcomed.

RAA's next exhibitions will be Wine and Dine and A Color Mix of Quilts and Artwork, which will run from April 18 to May 17 with an opening reception on Sunday April 19. Admission and parking for all exhibitions and events are free.

The Rockaway Artists Alliance works in partnership with the National Park Service at Gateway National Recreation Area and in part is supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, JP Morgan Chase, The Independence Community Foundation and Brooklyn Brewery.
