Presenting a palette of over fifty intriguing pieces by 30 different artists,
the Rockaway Artists Alliance heartily hosts Gifted 2007, an annual show
featuring the best works of its members. Comprising a broad mix of painting,
photography, poetry and images, watercolor and mixed media, Gifted will run from
Saturday November 17 to Sunday December 16 in the intimate setting of sTudio 6
of the Rockaway Center for the Arts at Fort Tilden. Its opening will be
heralded by a colorful reception on Sunday November 18. Many of the artists will be
on hand, refreshments will be served and lively entertainment is in the works
featuring music, poetry and more.
Gifted 2007 caps off a year of ever successful exhibitions for the RAA,
starting with Where Flowers Bloom in Winter. The show spotlights a wide variety of
arresting images, such the brightly hued mixed images of Amy
Ropp's painting
Face In Paradise. It also celebrates the quietness of form, such as in the
gentle flowering watercolor of Martha Killian's Portrait
Of A Rose. Standing in
counterpoint is the photographic energy of Rod Stewart by Mary
Lupo. Always
expanding the Art in artist, the RAA's latest show also spotlights the written
word as in Shirly Holt's Montever de Cloud Forest,
Costa Rica poem (which
accompanies an interesting separate companion piece) and the illustrated verses of
War and Before Tomorrow by Joan Boudreault. And spanning time and generation are
Egret and Shadow by photographer Denis Macrae and son John
Macrae's Organized
Chaos.
Gifted artists include Stephanie
Bellomo, Mary Blair, Madeline Braisted, Ludmila Bokov, Joan Boudreault,
Daniel Cronin, Kathryn Davenel, Dan Guarino, Shirly Holt, Kenneth
Hutley, Martha Killian, Eric Johnstone, Ruth Kraiem, Larisa Levina,
Mary Lupo, Denis Macrae, John Macrae, Maureen McGuire, James McKay,
Mary Meade, Eileen Morrissey, Ann Murray, Jason Novetsky, Gianni Piccoli,
Chris Preston, Renee Radenberg, Amy Ropp, Jessica Schulman, Marvin
Schwartz and Joan Vogel.
The Rockaway Artists Alliance
invites all to share an afternoon or two with Gifted. Gallery hours are
Saturday 12-4p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m. and by appointment. For information

The Rockaway Artists Alliance is also looking forward a new year of fine
exhibitions starting in January with Get Out of Town, featuring far away places in
art, and keeping up in March with Structure-The Art of Architecture,
Buildings and Bridges and celebrating Of Women in late April with the works of the
women of RAA and/or those who have previously exhibited with the group. Each of
these juried shows is also currently seeking submissions.
The RAA continues to host the free Thursday Music Open Mike Nights in sTudio
7 every week starting at 7pm and also the No Shame Theatre improv group every
Friday at the same time. It's true. There's a lot happening in the Rockaways!
RAA works in partnership with the National Park Service at Gateway National
Recreation Area and in part is supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs,
JP Morgan Chase, The Independence Community Foundation and Brooklyn Brewery.
Fort Tilden, located in the Rockaways, is an historic and now decommissioned
U.S. Army post. Today it is home to many cultural, community and sport
activities and serves as a premier part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a unique
urban national park that spans several boroughs and incorporates beaches,
marshlands and bird and wildlife refuges. Winter and summer its beaches, fields
and trails offer sanctuary to many a city weary traveler.
