Exhibition plus special events:
June 7 –
June 22, 2008 Opening Reception:
Sunday, June 15
1 PM – 3 PM
The Rockaway Artists Alliance has gathered its best works to proudly present
Good & Plenty, an exhibition which features over 18 artists. The show will
run from June 7 to June 22 and will host a lively opening reception on Sunday
June 15 from 1-3. Also inaugurated will be a first ever auction of RAA artists'
original works and a first of its kind Russian folk art showcase by the
international ethnographical art group Paraskeva. Live entertainment, exotically
arrayed refreshments and many of the artists will all be present at the opening
at sTudio 7 at the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort Tilden in the
Rockaways. In addition the RAA will be hosting the Rockaway Music and Arts
Council's Literary Arts Festival on Sunday June 8.
"This is a very exciting time for us," said and RAA spokesperson, "a real
coming together of the all the arts."
Good & Plenty draws from the best of all previous RAA shows and each work has
been specifically selected by the artist and the show's jury. It presents
work in sculpture, photography, painting, poetry, watercolor, mixed media,
drawing and even spoken word via audio CD. "The RAA has been exhibiting work from
artists far and wide for over 12 years, " said the spokesperson. "That's a lot
of talent and imagination to bring together in one place."
Also presented will be an auction wall, which will on view for the entire run
of the exhibition. Original pieces chosen by each individual artist will be
open for bid throughout and there will be a grand finale final auction on
Sunday June 22. Bidding may be done at anytime before then. Viewers can not only
support the arts but also create their own personal experience by owning a piece
thereof.
Meanwhile in the more intimate sTudio 6, the St. Petersburg-based group
Paraskeva will be presenting "Rag-baby Festival". This first of its kind
exhibition is the result of joint projects with the Russian Ethnographical
Museum, and
presents precise copies of ethnographical dolls from the museum collection,
author's costume dolls, the composition "Russian Wedding", and also very
interesting photographs of life and the way of life in Russia's villages in the 19th
century. A unique guide to the production of the traditional ritual dolls of
the different regions of Russia will be available. This will be the first
showing of this exhibition and Paraskeva is planning on further showcasing this
project in the U.S. and in other parts of the world.
In addition to its own events, the Rockaway Artists Alliance will also be
hosting the RMAC Literary Arts festival which will feature over forty authors,
discussion panels, writers talks, book sales and signings, children's
activities, local writing contest awards and more on Sunday June 8 from 10:30-6. Poetry
and prose reading, short plays and live music will be presented throughout
the day on the outdoor Moonstage. There will also be a mini-film festival held
in the Rockaway Theatre Company's Post Theatre on both Saturday June 7 and
Sunday June 8 from 7-11 in the evening.
Admission to all events and exhibitions is free, as is ample parking. The RAA
invites all to come and enjoy. "Where else can you see and do so much in one
place?"

U.S. Army post. Today it is home to many cultural, community and sport
activities and serves as a premier part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a unique
urban national park that spans several boroughs and incorporates beaches,
marshlands and bird and wildlife refuges. Winter and summer its beaches, fields
and trails offer sanctuary to many a city weary traveler. |
