where we came from

January 17 – February 15, 2009 Opening Reception:

The Rockaway Artists Alliance rings in the New Year with Heritage, a new exhibition dedicated to the past and to the future, and announces a slate of brand new shows and special events for 2009.
Heritage, through the work of fourteen individual artists, looks out into the world and asks, "Where on earth did we come from?" From Serbia to Scotland, from France to the Philippines, the answer is rendered in color and imagination that brings these far flung corners of the globe into the intimate setting of the sTudio 6 at Fort Tilden. Running from Saturday January 17 to Sunday February 15, Heritage will celebrate its opening from 1-3pm on Sunday January with lively company, good food and engaging live entertainment. sTudio 6 is part of RoCA, the Rockaway Center for the Arts.
In such works as "Roots
In Brooklyn," "Pompeii," "Native Land," "Noah & Sarah," and "Mirabilia" each artist uses words, watercolor, acrylics and oils, pen and ink, collage and color and black and white photography to paint a portrait of their path from past to present. Each brings this journey to life with a unique blend of talent, insight and point of view.
Each artist, along with the Rockaway Artists Alliance, invites all to come and share in this story told in art and in the process discover their own.
Heritage artists include: Lorraine Verdemare, Jessica Schulman, Rick Robles, Carol Rickey, Ralph Petagna. N.R. Mitgang, Maureen McGuire. Gabrielle Mangano, Denis Macrae, Marie Lewis, Levina Larisa, M. Elliot Killian, Philip Emelianov and Anthony Curcio.
Heritage starts
off a year of exciting new exhibitions and special events for the Rockaway
Artists Alliance. It will be followed up by a one of a kind showcase
of fine works from artist Geoff
Rawling's painting class from March 8 – March 29. April 18
to May 17 will welcome Wine
and Dine which explores in art the world of food and drink and
all the variations thereof. The rest of the year will see A
Color Mix of Quilts and Artwork, Geometric - which opens fascinating
new angles on the shapes of things, and the multi-media art and
performance exhibition which is ArtSplash 2009 that will coincide
with the traveling National Print Show. In addition the year will
also see Gifted, the annual members' exhibition and also Glass & Water,
a 'solo' show which counterpoints the talents of two artists working
respectively in watercolor and glass sculpture.
The RAA will also continue its Thursday
Open Mike Music Nights from 8pm on in the sTudio 7 gallery. A regular staple of Rockaway, it features a wide range of talented musicians, groups, singers and songwriters, as well as comedians, poets, spoken word artists and performers of all kinds.

Fort Tilden, located in the Rockaways, is an historic and now decommissioned U.S. Army post. Today it is home to many cultural, community and sport activities and serves as a premier part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a unique urban national park that spans several boroughs and incorporates beaches, marshlands and bird and wildlife refuges. Winter and summer its beaches, fields and trails offer sanctuary to many a city weary traveler. |
