sTudio 7 Gallery
Putting the 'ART' in the 'performing arts' in a big way, the Rockaway
Artists Alliance announces three lively events to take place on and around its
indoor stage at the sTudio 7 gallery at Fort Tilden Queens. Leading off the
vibrant and interactive offerings on Sunday September 30, and carrying forward the
popular Gallery Sitters Events series, will be poetry reading
by Shirly Holt and an open mike for poets of all kinds. Ms. Holt's poetic work and artistic talents are also currently on exhibition in ARTSPLASH 2007, featured in the same
gallery. ARTSPLASH, recently hosting an opening reception crowd of nearly 300,
showcases the work over 30 artists, poets included. "It's a great backdrop
to perform against," said a fellow poet who plans to attend Ms. Holt's reading
and open mike invitation. "Open mike's are great, especially in bringing out
new writers with new things to say and new ways to say it. It's a great
opportunity for the writers too."
And, continuing the successful Summer Moons free entertainment series, an RAA
spokesman announced "We're going right into Fall with Thursday
Open Mike Music Nights." Starting at 7pm every Thursday this ongoing event has already
attracted an eclectic string of musicians and singers of all types playing
everything from blues to rock to standards to hip hop. It has not only become a
venue for locally popular groups, but has also become a "spotlight for performers
from further and farther afield. Some of them are appearing here for the first
time. There's a wealth of talented people out there." Recognizing that the
RAA invites all to 'enjoy the performance and bring your instrument and your
musical talents,' too. All shows are free.
Bringing in an air of the unexpected the recently formed No
Shame improv
theater group made their debut and introduced their troupe at the ARTSPLASH
opening. Portraying an array of quirky characters the performers weaved through the
gallery goers and deftly drew them into their interactive style of acting. As
a new project every Friday night the NO SHAME THEATER is "open to anyone and
everyone to perform or to enjoy the tomfoolery" at the galleries in Fort
Tilden. More details on this adventure in art will follow.
All events and exhibitions are free, as is ample parking. Anyone interested
in reading at the open mike poetry session should call the RAA office at (718)
474-0861.
RAA works in partnership with the National Park Service at Gateway National
Recreation Area and in part is supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs,
JP Morgan Chase, The Independence Community Foundation and Brooklyn Brewery.
All RAA events take place in the newly renovated sTudio 7 and the more
intimate sTudio 6, both part of the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort
Tilden, Queens. Established in 1917, scenic Fort Tilden, bordered by the beaches
of Rockaway along the Atlantic Ocean and by the calm shores and waters of
Jamaica Bay, is an historic deactivated U.S. Army post is now home to the Rockaway
Artists Alliance, The Rockaway Theatre Company, and many cultural,
entertainment, sports and community activities. ***************************************************************
