Retrospective
October 13 - November 4, 2007
Opening Reception
Sunday, October 14, 1-4 pm
Studio 6, Building T6
Award winning filmmaker and visual artist Robert
Sarnoff is coming to the
Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA). His new one-man exhibition, Retro Spective,
hosted by the Rockaway Artists Alliance, will be on view from Saturday October
13 to Sunday November 4. The exhibition will be showcased in the RAA's sTudio
6 gallery and a lively reception will be held on Sunday October 14 from 1-4.
"I feel good!" says artist and filmmaker Robert
Sarnoff, echoing James
Brown, when asked about his new exhibition. Retro Spective takes viewers on an
adventurous expedition through the many facets and phases of Mr. Sarnoff's
unique body of work. From editorial cartoons to award wining short films, with
paintings and pencil drawings along the way, it's quite a tour. Or, as the Mr.
Sarnoff puts it, "There are enough stories (here), enough visuals, enough faces
and personalities to fill a lifetime."
His film Irish Ropes, which has been airing on MSG network, and charts the
rise and fall of a champion producing Rockaway gym, will be featured. His
documentary style No Rooms Lobby portrait of a life on the edge of poverty will also
be screened. The film has been requested for the archives of the National
Coalition for The Homeless and the Queens Cinema Collection. Both films, plus his
newest, Dispatch, will be shown throughout the exhibition.
Mr. Sarnoff's painting and drawings, which often reflect a keen observation
of life in the Rockaways, will also be on view. Presently examples of his work
have resided in the collections of designer Oleg Cassini, actors Eli Wallach,
and Cleavon Little and the late tennis star Arthur Ashe. Many of his
paintings hang on the walls of corporate spaces, innumerable homes and can be found on
Marilyn Monroe's immortalmarilyn website, Saatchi Gallery's website, and his
own www.rockawayoflife.com.
Also among the events scheduled during Retro
Spective will be signings of his
book on cartooning and also of the Ye Olde Jetty cachet stamp and matted
print which he designed for the United States Postal Service. Some of these have
become a rare collectible item due to a first series misprint of the artist's
name as "Sarnoss" rather than Sarnoff. Only a rare few of these exist.
All are invited to come and enjoy Retro
Spective. As Mr. Sarnoff says of his
new show, "If people come away with a smile, a memory, enlightenment or
inspiration, that would be most satisfying." In that Retro Spective is well worth
the journey.
