Sunday, April 22 — 10-5 pm Rockaway Music
and Arts Council Literary Festival

The BIG Show and Of
Land And Sea are not only the latest artistic exhibitions
to hit the Rockaways, but also the perfect description as
the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the Rockaway Music and Arts
Council, and the Rockaway Theatre Company all come together
at the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) for a truly BIG
Four R weekend at Fort Tilden, Queens. Opening on Saturday
April 21 both of these exciting gallery entries promise a wealth
of unique images as artists of all kinds invite the viewer
into a world of imagination and talent. Then on Sunday, April
22 these fine exhibitions provide the showcase and backdrop
for dozens of writers and publishing professionals as well
as spoken word and musical performers as RoCA celebrates the
first ever Rockaway
Music and Arts Council Literary Festival from 10-5 pm.
The Festival will utilize the RAA's sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 galleries
and outdoor Moonstage, while the Rockaway
Theatre Company's Post Theatre will present
film selections from the works of invited scriptwriters. It promises
to be one big and busy exciting Sunday.
The BIG Show itself has invited artists to 'Think Big' and dare to bring out
their biggest ideas in a show of immeasurable proportions. Open to all media
- drawing, painting, watercolor, photography, sculpture, installation, video,
quilting, literature and more, all works are a minimum of six feet. The BIG
Show will be presented in the sTudio 7 gallery and outdoor sculpture garden and
is open to any and all themes.
Once again all points led to the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort
Tilden as the Rockaway Artists Alliance drew hundreds to the opening reception
for Of Land And Sea and The BIG Show. Although previewed during the Rockaway
Music and Arts Council's Literary Festival in the RAA's sTudio 6 and sTudio 7
galleries, each show now comes into its own right. Of Land and Sea celebrates
the mystery and beauty of nature through art, while The BIG Show brings to
life a playful palette of wonder with works measuring over six feet.
Previous RAA openings have attracted several hundred enthusiastic viewers and
the combined Of Land And Sea and The BIG Show reception was no exception.
Many attendees were first time visitors who expressed delight in discovering
this 'new' facet of Rockaway.
Many of the artists were on hand. Musical entertainment was provided by Mary
Kelly and Gustavo Lucin, two very unique and talented performers. Later the
musical arts were further spotlighted as a several musicians played and
harmonized and traded musical genres in an impromptu session.

Of Land And Sea celebrates and explores the richness of nature through art.
Whether depicting the sun's rays penetrating the deep forest, swirling green
tides after a storm or dandelions determinedly growing up through busy city
streets, using painting, watercolor, drawing, mixed media, photography, video,
quilt, literature, sculpture and more, each artist is challenged to bring his or
her own unique point of view to the subject. On view in the RAA's more
intimate sTudio 6 gallery, Of Land And Sea is also perfectly presented against the
beauty of the Rockaway beaches and Atlantic shore and the wide blue Jamaica
Bay. The Rockaway Artists Alliance's Of Land And Sea and The
BIG Show are juried
exhibitions and both represent works selected from an impressive variety of
high quality submissions.
Of Land And Sea and The BIG
Show are presented in partnership with The
National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area.

The 2007 honorees include Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, Gateway National Recreation Area Superintendent Lisa Eckert, RAA Member Joseph Rothenberg, RAA Educator Khadyjah Alleyne and the Rockaway Little League. She and 26 other artists share not only the art but the experience of photography as presented in Photography: Process and Print, the latest exhibition from the Rockaway Artists Alliance. The show, which takes place in the sTudio 6 gallery of the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort Tilden, will be on view from March 10 through April 1. Dan Guarino "2 For $1.00" Digital Print

Marvin Schneider "Albany" B & W Silver Gelatin Print
|
|
As a unique gathering of photographic talent Photography: Process and Print runs the creative gamut from the surreal to the stark and employs a range of techniques and mediums which include film photography in color and black and white, digital photography, computer photo montage, gelatin silver print, panorama and photo collage.
As an example, Diane Ali, who states "When I photograph I look for abstract qualities that separate my subjects form their surroundings," achieves just that in her dreamlike "Italy Montage." Meanwhile closer to home, Gabrielle Mangano, who is also active in the Rockaway Theatre Company, assembles a literal shot by shot panorama of "An Italian Christmas Eve." And proving that even in a world of images seeing is sometimes believing, photographer Dan Guarino confirms that the intriguing "Picture Puzzle" is presented exactly as it was taken. The viewer is invited to guess the 'effect'.
Photography: Process and Print also leads visitors into the emotions conveyed by the art. Beyond the mechanics, like photography itself, this showcase explores the connections between the eye and the heart. As the creator of "Time in a Bottle" and "Little Red Boat" puts it "It is my belief that inspired expression can enlighten and educate…"
Interestingly Photography: Process and Print showcases many newcomers as well as the work of many seasoned photographers. Explains painter and printmaker Cindy Rosin, whose "Into The Woods" is featured, "this is my first endeavor in presenting photography for exhibition. I find it interesting that digital photography seems to have made the medium more accessible to a wider range of people." Or as Zachary Krull, represented by "Blue Lightening" and "The Colors of Strength", personalizes it "I love to paint pictures, so I began to take photos of scenes I wanted to paint. This turned into a love of the photo itself.
"What makes a photo in the 21st Century?" sums up "Heaven's Gate" photographer Susan Hines. "Does anyone know? Perhaps it is whatever you want it to be." The visually daring are invited see through the lens themselves and capture their own conclusions the at the Rockaway Artists Alliance exhibition Photography: Process and Print.
Photography: Process and Print artists include Diane
Ali, Tom Burke, Roger Carreau, Dan Cronin, Nora Cronin, Mariel Eisenberg,
Arnie Goodman, Willa Mae Gilbert, Dan Guarino, Patrick Hayden, Susan
Hines, Martha Killian, Zachary Krull, Gustavo Lucin, Gabrielle Mangano,
Denis Macrae, James McKay, Jeanette Mejias, Casey Mergen, Ann Murray,
Joan Murray, Karen Neuringer, Alysa O'Shea, Arianna Rose, Cindy Rosen,
Joseph Rosenberg, Marvin Schneider, Jessica Schulman, and Yuri Yurov.

WHERE FLOWERS BLOOM IN WINTER
Exhibition plus special events:
January 20 — February 18, 2007
Opening Reception:
Sunday, January 21,
1 pm - 3 pm
|
|
January's showers, of course, bring Where Flowers Bloom In Winter, the
new exhibition blossoming in the Rockaway Artists Alliance's sTudio 6 gallery
from January 21 to February 18. Many of the artists will be on hand for the
festive reception which will open the exhibit to the public on Sunday, January
21 from 1-3 pm. Guitarist and artistic guitar-maker T.K.
Kearney will provide the entertainment and refreshments will be served.
Where Flowers Bloom In Winter,
the first gallery event to be held at RoCA this year, brings the flowers
of the world to life in a unique exhibition. With words, watercolor, pencil,
pastel, film and digital photography, acrylics and oils, embroidery, quilt,
appliqué and even digital painting, each of 21 artists has brought their own touch to this perennial subject and found something new within it.
For instance, of unraveling the everyday flower in "Citrus Candy" and "Intimacy", photographer Arianna Rose says "I am that woman who stops at every bouquet of roses to sniff out their secrets." Meanwhile with "Irises" Ludmila Bokov starts with a jacket as her canvas and takes her flowery imagery far beyond mere decoration. Trying new techniques Ann Murray brings a supernatural quality of color to her front garden in "Coleus" and "Potted Impatiens 1". "This will be my first attempt at photography," she says.
Here the colorful and literate pencil work of Daniel
Cronin's "A Flower Homicide" takes its place alongside the gloriously magnified point of view of Janet
Dever's "Bottoms Up" watercolor. Laura
Flego's delicate shadings, soft as transforming mist in "Daffodils I", unfold within sight of painter Sheryl
Humphrey's expression of beauty within the beauty of nature in the fairytale-like "Woman In The Rhododendrons" and "The Dandelion Queen". Says Ms. Flego, "Although the (flowers) are fragile and temporary…I am pleased this grouping has taken on a sculptural quality" As Ms. Humphrey sees it "I think of these paintings as portraits of the spirits of nature; they reflect my vision of…the energies at work in the universe."
The Rockaway Artists Alliance invites all to touch that energy and experience the profusion of color and creativity that is Where Flowers Bloom In Winter. It is the perfect time of year to connect with the magic of creation. Or, as Laura Flego puts it, "Enjoy!"
Where Flowers Bloom In Winter artists include Ludmila Bokov, Dan Cronin, Janet Dever, Laura Flego, Wilda Gallagher, Willa Mae Gilbert, Dan Guarino, Igor Gushchin, Sheryl Humphrey, Martha Killian, Rebecca Klementovich, Laris Levina, Colleen Lonergan, Maureen McGuire, Jeanette Mejias, Ann Murray, Mary Nestor, Arianna Rose, Jessica Schulman and Joan Vogel.
On Sunday, February 18 the Rockaway Artists
Alliance announced the results of the drawing held with the exhibition
Where Flowers Bloom In Winter. Taking the honors and the prize of
a lovely basketed flower arrangement was Mr. James Killian of Rockaway
Point. The prize was donated by Danielle's Rockaway Florist, Ltd. Though
not present for the drawing, Ms. Mary Powers, also of Rockaway, won the
beautifully framed watercolor Hawaiian Flowers donated by artist Martha
Elliot Killian. Sunday was final day of this highly popular and well attended
exhibition.

GIFTED 2006
Exhibition plus special events:
November 4 — December 10, 2006
Opening Reception:
Sunday, November 5,
1 pm - 3 pm
Dec. 2 - 2 pm Special Event -
"Note For Note"
music and poetry
with Mary Kelly & Dan Guarino
Admission Free to exhibition and events.
Between the bustle of Thanksgiving visiting and the rush of holiday shopping, two multitalented artists invite you to take an afternoon off and enjoy Note
For Note: Music and Poetry with Mary Kelly and Dan Guarino.
Presented by the Rockaway Artists Alliance as part of its popular
Gallery Sitters Events series, Note For Note takes place on
Saturday December 2 at 2pm in sTudio 6 (building T-6).
Two popular performers, Mary Kelly and
Dan Guarino recently won a warm welcome at the opening reception for the
RAA's new Gifted exhibition. Both are
also represented by artwork in the show. Mary Kelly, an evocative painter,
held the audience with clear voiced renditions of new ballads, old Irish
songs and music from around the world, even taking a stab at Russian. Often
noted as a fine accapella singer, Ms. Kelly also had the crowd singing,
clapping along and even dancing when she rolled out her most infectious
guitar playing and rousing vocals for "La Bamba." Dan Guarino, a focused
photographer, not only performed his lively original poetry, but also played
and sang a variety of songs ranging from a strong voiced, unaccompanied
"Somebody Loves Me" by George Gershwin to a mix of originals, instrumental
and otherwise, which featured a blend of pop, rock, and ethnic folk music.
His singing and guitar playing also inspired an impromptu dance performance
from a member of the audience, with whom he good naturedly shared the stage.
Note For Note promises to be just as varied and exciting as that opening celebration.

The ever shifting colors of Fall and brilliant lights of early Winter provide the seasonal backdrop for the Rockaway Artists Alliance latest exhibition GIFTED 2006. The seventeen artists represented here bend creativity into many shapes and forms as they use watercolor, oil paint, acrylic, film and digital photography, stoneware, wood, wire and words to carve a picture of the world around them. The result is a show of unusual vibrancy and variety, juried and selected from dozens of submitted works. GIFTED will feature a celebratory opening reception on Sunday November 5th and many of the artists will be on hand. The show itself runs from Saturday November 4th
through Sunday December 10th in the sTudio 6 gallery of the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort Tilden, Queens.
Says photographer Arianna Rose in commenting on her GIFTED works, such as "Omega Boats" and "Rustic", "I endeavor to capture a moment in time; a glance, an emotion, spirit expressing itself. I create a 'mini-theatre" through the lens…"
Through shining translucent stoneware artist Heidi Wertz brings expression to "Bubbles" and other works, while painter Martha Killian summons the quiet of "Beach in Winter" to life through the world of watercolor. Previous Dublin Fair 1st place winner and current Long Island Quilters Society Show 2nd place winner Maryann McEvoy strikes out in a different direction and takes us "Under The Sea" in her quilted shimmering shades of aqua, blue and green.
As a Rockaway Artists Alliance spokesman said, "GIFTED is always a special show for us. We invite all to come down, enjoy show and see what we do. And especially at this time of the year we"d love for people to consider joining us and becoming members. You don"t have to be an artist to enjoy all the RAA has to offer."
And you don"t have to have ever picked up a camera or palette and brush to come and see GIFTED 2006. You just have to come and enjoy.
GIFTED 2006 artists include Heidi Wertz, Jessica Schulman, Gina Samson, Arianna Rose, Renee Radenberg, Ann Murray, Maryann McEvoy, Dennis Macrae, Larisa Lavina, Martha Killian, Mary Kelly, Bob Kaplan, Igor Gushschin, Dan Guarino, Wilda Gallagher, Mitra Dejkameh and Madeline Braisted.

5pm-8pm every night!
Free Admission
T-7 Building
-Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA)
There's a frost on the looking glass and a chill in the air that has nothing to do with the season as the Halloween extravaganza MALICE IN UNDERLAND descends upon Fort Tilden in the Rockaways for a frighteningly free four night fest from Saturday October 28 to Tuesday October 31st! It's the Rockaway Artists Alliance's spooky take on the classic Wonderland tale of Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat et al, as they transform their newly renovated sTudio 7 gallery space into a maze of rabbit holes, chess boards and tilting tea parties. MALICE IN UNDERLAND spirits adults and children alike into a mad world of sights and sounds as around each mysterious twist and turn guests interact with the shivering surprises this coven of mad artists has conjured up using paint, sculpture, visual effects, lighting, music and theatre. Actors, costumed characters, guides and ghostly helpers will keep the scary fun shrieking along and bring the thrills and chills to life.
Carrying on an honored tradition, MALICE IN UNDERLAND follows the ghoulish foot steps of the RAA's highly successful MINOTAUR'S MAZE event, which a spokesperson advises drew upward of a thousand people last year.
Spanning all Halloween weekend long, Saturday October 28 to Tuesday October 31 Halloween Night, from 5-8pm, admission to MALICE IN UNDERLAND is free to all and part of other spirited and safe community festivities, such as specially spooky stage productions presented by the Rockaway Theatre Company, to be held on Fort Tilden's grounds. Ample free parking is available.
The Rockaway Artists Alliance invites to all to let their imaginations run wild and have a frightfully close encounter with the arts.
MALICE IN UNDERLAND is presented in partnership with The National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area. It takes place within the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) renovated sTudio 7 gallery and on its grounds, located at Fort Tilden, Queens. Fort Tilden, an historic and now decommissioned U.S. Army post, is today home to many cultural and community activities in the Rockaways. It is bordered by the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and by the waters of Jamaica Bay. It is a central part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a uniquely picturesque urban national park which spans several boroughs and incorporates beaches, marshlands and bird and wildlife sanctuaries.
